Dusty Road Labradors

Upcoming Litters

Mark and I have decided to take a break from breeding.  We have no litters planned for the remainder of 2021 and possibly 2022.  It’s time to do some traveling!

Each of the parents have completed OFA, CERF, and DNA evaluations.

Two e-mails will be sent out prior to birth of the puppies and one e-mail just after birth.  #1 e-mail is sent out when our girls are bred.  This e-mail asks if you wish to still get a puppy.  #2 e-mail is sent out when we verify pregnancy.  #3 e-mail is sent after all puppies are delivered.  I attach pictures and let everyone know particulars — how many, colors, sexes.

Puppies will be offered AFTER they are 72 hours old.  If you accept the offer, a $200 nonrefundable deposit is required.

We would like to go over the basics of our puppy care. Puppies are whelped in our home surrounded by love and TLC. They are weighed twice daily for the first 10 days to monitor weight gain or loss.  Between 4 and 5 weeks of age, the puppies move to the dog barn to the nursery.

We have an X-ray taken of the mom about a week before she is due.  At that time, the bones/skull have calcified and are able to be counted.  This gives us a good indicator when labor should be over.  In the event labor stops before the number of pups on the X-ray are born, we know to seek help from our vet or Urgent Care.

We do not name puppies here at Dusty Road Labradors.  When the puppies are born, they are weighed and receive a ribbon collar. They will be referred to by the color of their collar, i.e.  “pink girl” or “black boy”.

The puppies go to the vet between days 3 and 5 to have their dewclaws removed and their first well-puppy visit. The vet looks for cleft pallets, hernias, or other problems.

The puppies are wormed by Mark and Janell at 2, 3, 5, and 7 weeks of age.

The puppies go to the vet again at 6 weeks for their first set of vaccinations and another well baby visit.

Our puppies are imprinted in the first few days of life. All parts of the body are touched until they relax meaning they are desensitized in that area. We introduce them to the blow dryer at this time. We rub their feet with Mark’s electric razor which imitates using a dremel to trim their toe nails.

During the first 8 weeks of their life, they will listen to all kinds of music. I love to play children’s songs with lots of different noises. I have several CD’s made for dogs.  Before going home, all puppies will have one to two baths, nail trimmed, and ears cleaned.

We have created a play area for the puppies where they have a tunnel, steps, slide, and an activity center with lots of things hanging.

When you pickup your puppy, you will receive a puppy packet containing your puppy registration, purchase contract with Dusty Road Labradors, and lots of information. We schedule one pickup at a time so we can spend time with you and answer any questions you may have.

We encourage you to take your puppy to the vet within 72 hours.
